What Do You Need To Know About Hemis Festival?

Hemis festival is one of the biggest and the most religious festivals of Ladakh attracting the travellers and local people. Hemis festival in Ladakh, a two-day affair is celebrated on 10th day of Tibetan lunar month and marks the colourful and vivid celebrations. This festival commemorates the birth anniversary of spiritual leader Padmasambhava, founder of Tibetan Buddhism. The venue and stage is set in the courtyard of Hemis monastery, which is the largest Buddhist monastery in Ladakh. During the celebrations, local people dress up in traditional clothes; men wear cummerbunds while women wear colourful headgears and heavy jewellery.

 

The head priest leads the celebrations of Hemis festival. The entertainers come out in the detailed and exclusive outfits, facade and brocade dresses with intense tinted masks. Lamas are seen performing the revered masked dance- Chaam while the musical drums, long horns and cymbals convoy them. The mask dance performance is an elementary component of Tantric tradition. Here is an amazing fact about Chams- it is performed in the monasteries where Vajrayana teachings of Tantric Buddhism are practiced. The dance performance- Chams demonstrates the central theme, which is- triumph of good over evil.

Hemis monastery is situated 40 kilometres from Leh and is referred as the loveliest, richest and renowned monastery of Ladakh. It dates back to 1630 under the rule of Sengge Mangyal. Thangka is a Tibetan Buddhist painting on silk or cotton that depicts a Buddhist deity, a mandala or a scene. It is presented once in a period of 12 years.
