The Blue peak or the Gouon Gompa is located in Chhiwang, about 22 km from Leh. Belonging to the Red Hat sect of Buddhism, the monastery was built by the founder of the Namgyal dynasty, King Lkra-Shis-Namgyal in 1500. The monastery was endowed by exquisite sculpture, thankhas and statues by the King and some of the rare books include copies of 13th century Tandshur (225 volumes of commentary by religious leaders on Kandshur), copy of the Kandshur, which is the translated word of Buddha.

The central image of Amitabha is flanked by Avalokitesvara, who is sculpted as 1,000 armed statue and various statutes of the Red hat sect lamas. Numerous ancient texts have been preserved in this gompa and have 100 lamas living there.
