Incredible Chadar Trek Package

Zanskar is heaven for trekking in India. Although it remains shut for around 7-8 months (November to June) in a year but it is still a paradise and trekkers wait all year around for it to become accessible.

The way to Zanskar trek gets accessible when Pensi La is opened and the roads at nearby places to Kargil and Padum see vehicular movement. Zanskar region is located at an altitude of approximately 12,000- 13,000 feet. .

Onwards Padum, Zanskar River merges with different tributaries flowing in Northeastern direction through Zanskar ravine and then finally merges with Indus River.

‘Chadar’ means a sheet or a blanket as Zanskar River is transformed from a rapid river to a white sheet of ice during winter.

The frozen Zanskar appears to be a glass ice sheet that ranges from bluish tone to golden yellow that is seen transformed from sunlight to moonlit light. It is a lifetime trek journey.

So, relax and take some rest in your hotel. Evening is set at leisure; you may opt to visit the local markets in Leh. It is enriched with culture and is dotted with temples and monasteries.

Overnight stay will be at a hotel in Leh.

Day 2 – India, Ladakh.

Chilling is the starting point for Chadar trek. Post breakfast at Leh, we will proceed to Chilling. From Leh to Chilling, the drive is around 50-60 kilometres. It is an adventurous drive, as we will be riding along Indus River via Nimu village. Nimu is the confluence point of Indus River and Zanskar River that offers an amazing sight of frozen Zanskar meeting the rapidly flowing Indus River.

After halting at this point for some time, we will follow the track again which is parallel to frozen Zanskar River. A ride towards road head and parallel to frozen river is an epic experience.

Upon reaching the point which is past the Chilling village, we will start our Chadar trek. Today, only 1-2 hours of trekking is scheduled along the spectacular frozen Zanskar River up to Tilat Sumdo.

Overnight stay will be in tent.

Day 3 – India, Ladakh.

Stuff yourself with hot tea and delicious breakfast in the early morning. This day is set for all day trek.

Enchanting sounds of forming and breaking of Chadar will amaze you first and then you will get familiar to it. In a short time, you will be able to know where the ice sheet is thick and thin. In between, a halt will be given for an early lunch. Post lunch, we will reach the mystic site. Lunch break is scheduled in between the trek where abundant sunlight is available. However, break time is less because the river flows through a ravine and direct sunlight is confined there.

Overnight stay will be in camp.

Day 4 – India, Ladakh.

After having breakfast in the early morning, this full day is set to embrace the most scenic and iced vistas and landscapes. Huge mountain slides rise vigorously as the river flow through the ravine. We may even spot some blue sheep while trekking along the frozen river. Not boasting more, some frozen waterfalls will fascinate you on the way.

Trekking through frozen river will give you a magnificent view of frozen waterfalls and ice cliffs. It will appear as if we are walking through a gigantic freezer. The walk through this trek will also let us cross the narrow ravines. While crossing the ravines, we may have to climb a little on to the craggy bank of river.

Lunch break is decided in between on a hillside by the river. However, the sharp bends and current of river may break the ice at some spots. We will reach the camping site.

Overnight stay will be at a camp.

Day 5 – India, Ladakh.

This day is set for full day excursion to frozen river trek. However, the prevention is to be taken because if the Chadar is not firm, it can be difficult. The stunning vistas will soothe our eyes, as we will pass through huge frozen waterfalls and ice cliffs. We may even get the chance to spot the mountain fox.

After having lunch, we will pass through the fondly known as ‘incense tree’. It is named so because of its holiness. The locals use the branches of this tree for morning rituals. We will also spot a prayer flag draped tree, it marks the entrance to proper Zanskar. By late afternoon, we will reach Naerak where our campsite is designated. On the river we will catch the sight of a decimated bridge. It is believed that this bridge dates back to over 1000 years.

Day 6 – India, Ladakh.

Although it is the return way so trekkers anticipate it to be the same but Chadar forming on Zanskar River keeps on changing. It is always like breaking and forming again. As the dynamics of Chadar are always changing, the trek does not look the same way.

On the way, we will meet many locals wearing traditional woollen clothes and the trekkers passing by. The locals trek across Chadar to reach their villages- Lingshed, Padum and Naerak. Merriments are shared and the trekkers may even get the chance to hear some unheard stories about the place. Their way of greetings and smiles keeps the spirit high while going through all the hardships.

Overnight stay will be at a camp.

Day 7 – India, Ladakh.

Today is set for the trek from Dibb to Shingra Koma. Shingra Koma is one of the biggest camping sites. This site is amazing giving you an amazing view right from a Hollywood flick. In front of the camping site, the Zanskar River seems to take a spectacular turn offering the jaw-dropping natural vistas.

Day 8 – India, Ladakh.

This is the last day of this lifetime trek. We will reach to road head where a vehicle will transfer us back to the hotel in Leh.

Upon arrival at Leh, you may relax with the lingering memories of this mesmerizing trek.
