Hemis festival is an annual festival in Ladakh, which is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava. The festival also celebrates the triumph of good over evil. The rituals, local music and mask dance are the major attractions of this festival. The venue for celebrations is set as Hemis Monastery, which is referred as the largest and richest monastery of Ladakh. The cultural extravaganza attracts the travellers from all over the world and the streets of Ladakh come alive during these celebrations. Day 1 – , .

You need to board the flight to Leh in the morning and then check-in to a hotel once you reach. The change in altitude will require you to take rest and relax your body and that’s why the rest of the day is kept free for you. After you are done relaxing for the day, you can opt to visit the local Leh Bazaar, like Moti Bazaar or Pearl Bazaar, which sells beautiful semi-precious jewel-ornaments. In evening you can visit Shanti Stupa, a Japanese religious place also named Japanese Peace Pagoda. The Pagoda is also frequently visited by visitors because of its amazing construction on hilltop and is known for eye pleasing views.

Day 2 – , .

 In the morning, we depart for Nubra Valley, which is in Northeast direction, and in the middle, we take the world’s highest motor-able road, Khardung-La Pass. We would be driving approximately 3 hours to cover a distance of 150 kilometres.

There will be a very enjoyable camel ride organized for you, which will be at your own expenses. Next in line is a trip to the most important village of Nubra Valley, that is the Diskit Village, in which Diskit Monastery, built by Lama Sherab Zangpo, is claimed to be the most notable place to visit in the village.

Towards the end of the day, we will stay for overnight in camp located in wonderful Hunder Village.

Day 3 – , .

Our morning will start with nutritious breakfast, which will be followed by a journey through Khardung-La Pass to return to Leh. In Leh, we would visit Jokhang, a small Gompa established in 957 by Buddhist Association of Ladakh. The evening is at leisure so that you can roam Leh bazaar or nearby places at your own.

You will then return to hotel for overnight stay

Day 4 – , .

Today witness the annual Hemis festival, this is held at Ladakh’s largest monastery- Hemis Monastery. This monastery belongs to Red Hat sect and was built in 1630. It is widely known for its magnificent architecture. From Leh, it is at a drive of 45 minutes. After reaching Hemis Monastery, you will witness the Lamas performing Chaam dance, a vibrant pageant and an annual local bazaar where people can shop the souvenirs. Being part of festival, you will get insights of Buddhist culture and their lifestyle.

Day 5 – , .

After having breakfast at Leh, we will drive towards Hemis monastery to attend the full day ceremony of annual festival. The rectangular courtyard of the monastery is major attraction of Hemis festival. A table is placed with few cups of holy water, rice, tormas (made of butter, dough) and some incense sticks. Musicians play traditional music with cymbals, drums, trumpets and other musical instruments. The festival begins with a ritual of displaying the portrait of ‘Dadmokarpo’- founder of Hemis Monastery with the drumbeats and cymbals sounds. After that the enchanting celebrations begin with mystic mask dance performances. Mask dance is performed only in those monasteries that follow tantric vajrayana teachings.

Overnight stay will be at a hotel in Leh.

Day 6 – , .

On this morning we will drive for approximately 5 hours from Leh to Pangong Lake. This lake is in South-West direction from Leh and is situated in the Indo-China region. The distance covered in this journey will clock to 145 kilometres. While travelling through this journey, we will also visit Shey Palace and monastery wherein we will witness the Largest Buddha statue.

When we reach the Lake, we will experience unimaginable view of Changchenmo Mountain range’s reflection in the very pure and clean lake water. In the evening, we will start our return journey to Leh.

Overnight stay will be at a hotel in Leh.

Day 7 – , .

Today you would drive to Tso Moriri Lake. This place is 8 hours away from Leh. Tso Moriri Lake is situated at an altitude of 4520 meters. Since, it is the highest lake in nomadic belt this place is extremely beautiful. After seeing the beautiful lake we will proceed to visit Karzok Village. We can also explore the area during the evening and enjoy the surroundings.

After visiting all these beautiful places overnight stay will be at a camp or hotel in Tso Moriri.

Day 8 – , .

This day is meant for exploring the local markets and shops of Leh. Once you drive back to Leh from Tso Moriri you will have the day for you to enjoy. It is an 8 hours journey. After reaching at this place, you can relax and finish your shopping here.

Day 9 – , .

After enjoying this memorable trip, it is time to depart. Have a safe journey.
